Classroom Management:
A Kind Word Goes a Long Way
We all give our best when we feel affirmed and valued. Thus I operate my class on a very strong commitment to value your child on as many different levels as I can while they are in my class but also throughout the whole school as well. It is my goal to speak words of affirmation into your child's life. A kind word can go a long way with anyone.
High Flyers
I will operate my class looking for "High Flyers" each day. These will be students I see in my class displaying positive behaviors, such as those listed in the expectations for students but, not limited to those 5 only. I may not catch everyone every time but, I will do my best to affirm students who are being leaders and role models for others. At the end of class, it will be my goal to pick the student(s) that I saw as the "High Flyers" of the day. They will move up higher on my "High Flyers" bulletin board. These "High Flyers can continue to rise throughout the month to new highs of leadership and being a positive role model and bringing success to our class time. At the end of the month, we will recognize our "High Flyers" with a round of applause and then start a new from ground level for the next month. It is my desire and goal by the end of the year to turn the selection of the the "High Flyers" over to the students themselves. Not as a popularity vote but, to teacher the students themselves to recognize their peers and the influence they bring to a successful classroom.
Classroom Report Cards
Each day students come to Health Living class they will be given a group grade with a total of up to 5 points possible. These points are recorded on the Classroom Report Card Score Sheet and given to the homeroom teacher. The goal of the report card is to earn the maximum 5 points each day. The more 5 point days the whole class has, the more successful our learning time. You never know what might happen though when we record quite a few 5 point days! The class earns one point for the following behaviors as a whole group:
1. Enter the classroom appropriately
2. Listen to the teacher
3. Teamwork listen and kindness to peers.
4. Give your best.
5. Line-up correctly without a reminder of what a good line looks like.
Students will want to work hard as a team to earn the 5 points. It just takes one person to cost the group a classroom point but, a good team works together to accomplish the team goal.
Grading
Students are aware beginning the second week of school, that I will mark a daily citizenship grade for each of them based on what they showed me in their behavior. These grades are my way of deciding where students fall on the district progress report in the area of citizenship in health.
See the grading policy for more on progress reports and grading.
